Avoiding the Trap: A Daily Devotional
- Ernest H. Benjamin
For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well. She lies in wait like a robber and increases the unfaithful among mankind. — Proverbs 23:27–28
When Temptation Waits in the Shadows
Have you ever walked a familiar path, only to stumble over something hidden in plain sight? That’s how temptation works. It waits quietly, often disguised as something harmless—until you trip, and suddenly you’re trapped in a cycle you never intended to enter.
Proverbs 23:27–28 paints a vivid picture of this reality. Sexual sin is described as a deep pit and a narrow well—a place of entrapment that promises satisfaction but delivers regret. In today’s world, where temptation is everywhere—from social media scrolls to casual conversations—these verses serve as a powerful warning and a call to vigilance.
But the beauty of God’s Word is this: He not only warns us about the trap but also shows us how to avoid it and walk in freedom. Let’s dive deeper.

1. The Trap of Sexual Sin: Recognize the Danger
Solomon uses the metaphors of a “deep pit” and a “narrow well” to warn against the perilous nature of sexual sin. These images evoke the feeling of being stuck, trapped, and unable to escape.
In modern times, these dangers are amplified. Consider these examples:
Pornography: What begins as curiosity often spirals into addiction, distorting healthy relationships and leaving you isolated.
Emotional Affairs: A seemingly innocent connection at work or online can quickly cross boundaries, leading to betrayal and heartbreak.
Casual Hookups: The world glorifies instant gratification, but these encounters often leave emotional scars that last far longer than the moment.
Reflection:
Where in your life might you be standing too close to the edge?
What boundaries can you set to protect yourself from falling into the “pit”?
Action Step:
Identify one specific area where you’re vulnerable to temptation and take immediate steps to address it. Whether it’s installing accountability software, avoiding certain conversations, or limiting screen time, don’t wait until you’ve fallen to act.
2. The Deception of Temptation: It Lies in Wait
Verse 28 warns that temptation “lies in wait like a robber.” This imagery is haunting because it reveals the predatory nature of sexual sin. It doesn’t come barging into your life—it waits, quietly and patiently, for the perfect moment to ensnare you.
Modern Examples of Hidden Traps:
Social Media: That private message from an old friend seems innocent, but it could spark inappropriate emotions.
Entertainment: Shows, music, and ads often glamorize sexual immorality, subtly normalizing behaviors that pull us away from God’s design.
Loneliness: When we feel isolated, we’re more likely to seek comfort in places or people that lead us down the wrong path.
Reflection:
Are there habits, relationships, or environments in your life that might be laying a trap?
How can you strengthen your defenses against temptation?
Action Step:
Pray for discernment and wisdom to see the traps before you step into them. Be intentional about surrounding yourself with people, content, and environments that strengthen your walk with God.
3. God’s Design for Intimacy: Pursue Purity and Faithfulness
The world celebrates indulgence, but God calls us to something far more beautiful: faithfulness, commitment, and purity. When we follow His design for sexuality, we honor Him, protect our hearts, and build relationships that thrive.
What Does God’s Design Look Like?
In Marriage: Faithfulness isn’t just avoiding infidelity; it’s about nurturing love, trust, and intentional intimacy with your spouse.
In Singleness: Purity is more than abstinence—it’s living with a heart wholly devoted to God, trusting His timing and plan for your future.
Reflection:
Are you actively honoring God’s design for relationships in your current season of life?
How can you model purity and faithfulness in a culture that normalizes compromise?
Action Step:
If you’re married, schedule intentional time this week to reconnect with your spouse—through prayer, conversation, or a date night. If you’re single, dedicate time to prayer and ask God to strengthen your resolve to honor Him in your relationships.
4. Freedom Through Grace: No Pit is Too Deep
Perhaps you’re reading this and thinking, It’s too late for me. I’ve already fallen into the pit. Here’s the truth: no pit is too deep for God’s grace.
1 John 1:9 promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” No matter what you’ve done or how far you’ve strayed, God’s love and forgiveness are available to you.
Illustration:
Imagine someone trapped in quicksand, sinking deeper with every movement. Just when they think all hope is lost, a hand reaches out to pull them free. That’s what God’s grace does—it rescues, restores, and redeems.
Reflection:
Is there a sin you need to confess and surrender to God today?
Are you willing to accept His forgiveness and take steps toward restoration?
Action Step:
Spend time in prayer, confessing your struggles to God. If necessary, seek accountability from a trusted pastor, mentor, or Christian counselor who can walk alongside you in your journey toward healing.
Choose the Narrow Path
Proverbs 23:27–28 is more than a warning; it’s a call to action. It urges us to:
Be vigilant against temptation.
Pursue God’s design for purity and faithfulness.
Trust that His way leads to life and freedom.
In a world that glorifies sin, choosing God’s way isn’t easy—but it’s worth it.
Challenge:
This week, commit to identifying one area where you can step back from the edge of temptation and walk more closely with God.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the wisdom in Your Word that warns us of the dangers of temptation. Help me to guard my heart, set boundaries, and pursue purity. When I stumble, remind me of Your grace that forgives and restores. Lead me on the path of life, and may my relationships bring honor to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
