Strange Fire & True Worship – A Devotional on Leviticus 10

  • Ernest H. Benjamin

Are We Offering Strange Fire to God?

Imagine walking into church and seeing two pastors fall dead at the altar—struck down by God.

That’s exactly what happened to Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron. They were consecrated priests, chosen to serve in God’s presence. But when they offered “unauthorized fire”—worship that God had not commanded—they were consumed by fire from heaven.

Why? Because worship is not about what we want—it’s about what God commands.

This passage is a sobering warning:
🚨 Not all worship is acceptable to God.
🚨 Partial obedience is still disobedience.
🚨 The fear of the Lord is not optional—it is essential.

Many today approach God casually, shaping worship around personal preference instead of biblical truth. But God does not accept "strange fire"—He desires reverence, holiness, and obedience.

Let’s explore how this applies to our lives today.

1. True Worship Must Be on God’s Terms, Not Ours (Leviticus 10:1-2)

🔹 “Nadab and Abihu… offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them.”

Their mistake wasn’t worshiping a false god—they tried to worship the true God in the wrong way.

🔥 For Today:

  • Many treat worship as entertainment, valuing experience over truth.

  • Some believe "sincerity is enough"—but God requires obedience, not just good intentions.

  • Worship is not about what makes us feel good—it’s about what honors God.

Faith Response: Ask yourself, Am I worshiping God in spirit and truth, or in my own way?

2. Partial Obedience is Still Rebellion (Leviticus 10:2)

🔹 “Fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.”

Nadab and Abihu offered what God did not command—and God rejected it.

🚨 We don’t get to rewrite God’s commands.

🔥 For Today:

  • Are you following God fully, or only in areas that are comfortable?

  • Do you pick and choose which parts of Scripture to obey?

Faith Response: Commit to complete obedience, not selective faithfulness.

3. Spiritual Leaders Are Held to a Higher Standard (Leviticus 10:3)

🔹 “Among those who are near me, I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.”

As priests, Nadab and Abihu were expected to know better—yet they treated God’s presence lightly.

🔥 For Today:

  • Pastors and teachers must uphold biblical truth, not cultural trends.

  • Leaders who distort God’s Word for popularity put themselves in spiritual danger.

  • God’s standards do not change to fit modern culture.

Faith Response: If you’re in leadership, ask: Am I honoring God in everything I teach and live?

4. Feelings Must Never Override Obedience (Leviticus 10:3)

🔹 “And Aaron held his peace.”

Aaron lost two sons, but he remained silent—because God’s holiness was more important than his emotions.

🔥 For Today:

  • Many people let emotions determine obedience rather than God’s Word.

  • Just because something feels right doesn’t mean God approves of it.

Faith Response: Choose truth over feelings—even when it’s hard.

5. The Fear of the Lord Brings Life, Not Death (Leviticus 10:7)

🔹 “You shall not go out from the entrance of the tent of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you.”

God’s presence demands reverence, not casual familiarity.

🔥 For Today:

  • Many have lost the fear of the Lord, treating Him like a friend rather than a King.

  • True fear of God leads to wisdom, obedience, and blessing (Proverbs 9:10).

Faith Response: Renew your reverence for God. Approach Him with awe and humility.

How to Apply Leviticus 10 to Your Life

✅ Evaluate Your Worship – Is it based on God’s Word or personal preference?
✅ Commit to Full Obedience – Are you following God’s commands fully or selectively?
✅ Honor God’s Holiness – Approach Him with reverence, not casual indifference.
✅ Pray for Spiritual Leaders – Ask God to keep pastors, teachers, and churches faithful to His truth.

A Prayer for Reverence and Obedience

Lord, I recognize Your holiness and sovereignty. Help me to approach You with reverence, worshiping You in spirit and truth. Keep me from offering “strange fire”—worship or obedience that is not according to Your Word. Let my life be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Encouragement

Leviticus 10 is a warning and a call to revival: God is holy, and we must worship Him on His terms.

✅ Worship must be reverent.
✅ Obedience must be complete.
✅ The fear of the Lord leads to life.

Memorable Takeaway:
We can approach God only on His terms—anything else is “strange fire.”
